ABOUT
The Mayor’s Fund for Education is a nonprofit working in collaboration with the Mayor of Long Beach in support of education in our city and the commitment we have to the Long Beach College Promise.
The mission of the Mayor’s Fund for Education is to offer community‐wide programs and amplify efforts of local education stakeholders to provide a cradle‐to‐career approach ensuring all students have access to educational pathways and careers resulting in a vibrant local economy.
The Mayor’s Fund collaborates with community, civic, and education partners to help address the most pressing needs facing Long Beach area students and their families because we believe that investment in education, offers one of the greatest opportunities for meaningful impact – one that can transform a community and change lives.
The Mayor’s Fund is a nonprofit separate from the City of Long Beach (receiving no public funding outside of competitive bids/proposals), serving the City of Long Beach and, more broadly, the students of the Long Beach Unified School District.
Impact Areas
The Mayor’s Fund for Education’s primary Impact Areas are:
Early Childhood Education
A powerful body of research shows that investing in quality early education is highly effective in increasing high school graduation and college attendance, decreasing crime, and building a stronger economy.
Ad-Hoc – COVID Response
In response to a critical need created by the COVID-19 related economic downturn, the Mayor’s Fund began providing logistical oversight for the acquisition, storage, and distribution of essential children supplies (such as PPE, cleaning products, diapers, wipes, infant formula, education materials) which local child care/education providers and families were struggling to find and/or afford.
Internship Opportunities & Workforce-Readiness
Research demonstrates that early exposure to labor market experiences leads to increased educational achievements and earnings attainment. Real-world work experience provides a young person the opportunity to broaden career interests as well as gain critical workplace and leadership skills.
Improving College Completion
In addition to being one of the most important predictors of earning capacity, a post-secondary credential is also shown to promote civic responsibility, advance economic competitiveness and expand economic opportunity for our City’s most challenged and vulnerable young adults.
